An Administrative Review is an internal formal review process of the UK Home Office that allows visa applicants to challenge unlawful, unfair or unreasonable immigration decisions. This is a paper-based challenge process whereby following submission of the grounds of challenge by the applicant, the Home Office reviews the decision. Usually, new documents are not taken into account at this stage and cannot normally be submitted, and there are no oral hearings. The £80 application fee is only refunded if the review succeeds or if the application is invalid. Applications must be submitted within 14 days if inside the UK (28 days if outside). Decision timelines vary, with most UK-based cases taking up to six months or more and overseas cases potentially 12 months or longer.
